The Woking Fairtrade Action Network aims to promote the use of Fairtrade products in Woking in order to help producers in so-called 'developing countries'. Our first aim was for Woking to be officially recognised as a Fairtrade Town. This we achieved in September 2005.
A Fairtrade Town is one which has made a commitment to supporting Fairtrade, which is a way to support disadvantaged farmers and workers in developing countries. In practice, this means that local people recognise the Fairtrade Mark and understand that it guarantees that the goods they buy provide a better deal for the producers from the Third World. It also means that Fairtrade products are widely available in supermarkets, cafés and places of work.
Woking is a thriving town of about 90,000 people with a strong sense of local community. This is matched by the daily awareness - through work, family ties and holiday - that our town is part of a global village. Woking Borough Council has recognised this, especially in the lead it has taken on environmental issues, demonstrating its understanding that the future lies in addressing global concerns with local action.
Becoming a Fairtrade Town takes this one step further, bringing fair trade practices to the heart of who we are as a community, how we live and how we choose to shop and do business.
Five goals need to be met before the Fairtrade Foundation awards Fairtrade Town status.
The Steering Group co-ordinates the work of the network, builds and maintains links with the council and local businesses and develops strategies to promote Fairtrade products in Woking.
